GRANT, Charles I. - Veteran WWII, US Marines Peacefully at the Collingwood General Hospital, on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Julia and predeceased by his first wife Ada. Loving father of Joan Doyle, Lorraine Whiteford, Linda Hamer, Stuart Grant (Akiko), Caroline Grant, Betty Temple (Garry MacNaughton) and predeceased by his son Bryan Grant. Dear grandfather of 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Survived by his sister Brenda Gooding. Funeral Service will be held at the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (Hwy. 10, N. of QEW) on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 1 p.m. with visitation beginning at 12 noon. Cremation to follow.

Flack, John H.

John H. Flack 81, Indianapolis died January 19, 2009. He was born June 27, 1927 in North Vernon, Indiana to James W. and Laura E. (Beck) Flack. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Audrey (Prescott) Flack; children Robert (Kandy) Flack, Thomas (Jeanie) Flack, Laura (Dave) Schenkel; 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; sisters Thelma Johnson, Opal (Lester) Hammons, Margaret Drummond, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and 12 brothers and sisters. John was a Marine Corps veteran in WW II as well as serving in China and the Korea War. He retired as a Lieutenant after serving 35 years with the Indianapolis Police Department. John was a retired Colonel in the Indiana National Guard, and a member of the following organizations: the Chosin Few, the Indiana Marine Corps League, the First Marine Division, Retired Police Officer's Association, and the FOP Lodge #86. John received the Purple Heart May 16, 1992 for wounds received on May 27, 1945 on Okinawa as well as numerous other awards and commendations. He was a highly decorated IPD Lieutenant including Policeman of the Year in 1969. Other IPD awards and accomplishments include 2 valor awards, 1 bravery award, 4 Red Cross Hall of Fame awards, and 38 commendations. John was also an accomplished military artist with several paintings residing in numerous military museums around the world including the Indiana World War Memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Marine Corps League Scholarship Fund. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Flanner and Buchanan Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Chapel where visitation will be 4-9 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009. Ward, Hazen E.

Hazen Edward Ward 84, of Indianapolis, passed away August 11, 2009 at the Roudebush VA Medical Center. He was born on December 10, 1924 in Traders Point, IN to Thomas and Katie (Knipp) Ward. He married Diana Morehouse, who survives him, on August 26, 1952 in Andover, SD. He is also survived by daughters, Gayle (Mark) Harrell of Centerville, IN and Brenda Ward of Camby, IN; granddaughters, Katie (Dominic) DeLucio of Richmond, IN and Heather Harrell of Centerville, IN; sister, Mary Slagle of Lebanon, IN; sister-in-law, Fern Ward of Thorntown, IN; several nieces and nephew, and many friends. Mr. Ward grew up in Boone County, IN and graduated from Pinnell High School. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1987 from Allison Division of General Motors after 37 years. He was Past Master of Celestial Masonic Lodge # 525 in Whitestown, IN, a life member of H.I. Bearss Marine Corps League, life member of Disabled Veterans of America, and a life member of the Loyal Escorts. He was also a 50 year member of Salem United Methodist Church, Zionsville, IN, a member of American Legion Post 79, Zionsville, IN, and a member of the World War II Round Table. Mr. Ward was a volunteer fireman with Pike Township for 25 years, a volunteer at Roudebush VA Medical Center for 15 years, and a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his parents; brother Kenneth Ward; and sisters, Mamie Gates and Martha Wilcox. Calling will be Thursday, August 13, 2009 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center, Zionsville, IN with Marine Corps League services at 8 pm. Funeral services will be Friday, August 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church, Zionsville with burial following at Salem Cemetery. Kett, Gilbert F.

Gilbert F. Kett 77, a long time resident of Carmel, IN passed away peacefully on January 22, 2009. Gilbert was born on May 15, 1931 to Carl Edward and Jeanne May (Theis) Kett in Covington, Kentucky. He graduated from Shortridge High School followed by earning a B.S. at Indiana University in 1957. Gilbert served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954. He forged a successful career with Ryerson Steel for 40 years. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Indiana University Alumni Association, Mayor Lugar's Task Force, Zionsville Community and Carmel United Methodist Church Choir, Past President of the Eden Forest Homeowners Association, Past President of the Carmel Economic Development Commission, developer of the Flowing Well of Carmel that is in the process of being renamed The Gilbert F. Kett Memorial Flowing Well, Founder and Board Member of the Carmel Clay Legacy Fund, Carmel Chamber of Commerce Citizens Award, Contributing artist of the St. Mary's Miracle Ball, Godfather St. Mary's Child Center, President of the Five Seasons Board of Governors, Paul Harris Fellow, Recipient of 2005 Carmel Rotary Outstanding Service Award, Marine Corps League, Gyro Club of Indianapolis, F.B.I Citizens Academy Graduate, and Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce Presidents Citation. Gilbert was a WWII history buff and enjoyed snow skiing, golf, was an avid tennis player and enjoyed international travel. He was also an accomplished artist, photographer, writer and illustrator. Survivors include daughter, Cynthia Ann (Daniel) Ferrulli; son, Eric Cochran (Amanda) Kett; sister, Lois Jeanne (Robert) Kiley; granddaughter, Mia Ann Ferrulli; many nieces and nephews and beloved companion of many years, Jeannine A. DeRoy and her children, Janelle (Luke) Drake; grandson, Eli Drake and Darin DeRoy. Gil lived his life with passion and love. He was a loyal friend to many and a wonderful example of putting people first in his life. He touched countless lives and was all about how he made people feel. Friends and family may gather for a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with a visitation to follow from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel both on Sunday, January 25, 2009.
